Dr. Appleman received his Masters and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. Prior to founding Cubano Gallery, he was an educational administrator, director of a psychology clinic, and CEO of a medical imaging company. He was awarded Educator of the year by the State of Minnesota for fighting for student rights.

His mission is to bring the message of the dire situation of the Cuban people and the creative talent of Cuban artists to Americans.
Appleman led a 20 member mission to Cuba in 2009. He has had the largest Cuban exhibit and auction in the Midwest. He has exhibited at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, St. Paul, Minnesota. He has raised thousands of dollars, supporting Cuban artists and humanitarian causes.
Two decades ago, when he first donated a few euros to children of the Hebrew school children at Beth Shalom Synagogue, Havana, he received letters in Spanish from the children thanking him for their first pair of tennis shoes, notebooks, or backpacks. This dire situation was the window of opportunity for Appleman to launch multiple humanitarian trips and Cubano Art Gallery.
